New Spaces for a Historic School
After heavy snow damaged the portable classrooms at Kennedy School in Butte, SMA and Langlas & Associates were asked to step in and solve the need for lost space. Working closely with the Butte School District, SMA designed a new 5,400 square foot addition that not only replaced the two classrooms that were damaged but added a larger library and accessible restrooms. The new addition connected seamlessly to the existing 1954 structure.
The building follows current 21st century learning principles for school design including flexible layouts, furniture for utility, integrated technology, and plenty of light-filled spaces. Smart boards and computer stations are integrated throughout, and the classroom furniture is utilitarian, modern, and flexible.
Bright Spaces for Bright Kids
Important to today's learning environments, all spaces have ample natural light provided by the large windows.
The interior design includes bright, playful colors and environmental graphics inspiring Butte's bright elementary students.
